What is ACL – Reconstruction ?
ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure to replace a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a major ligament in your knee. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect your thigh bone to the shinbone, helping stabilize your knee joint.
During ACL reconstruction, the torn ligament is surgically removed and replaced with a band of tissue that usually connects muscle to bone called tendon. It is taken from another part of your knee or from a deceased donor.
Conditions when you need ACL Reconstruction
You may develop an ACL injury by performing activities that put stress on your knee. Like Suddenly slowing down and changing direction while playing a sport or exercising, twisting or rotating with your foot firmly planted, improper landing from a jump, stopping suddenly or encountering a direct blow to the knee.
You may be recommended an ACL reconstruction by the doctor after examining your case if:
- More than one ligament is injured.
- Having a torn meniscus that requires repair.
- The injury is causing severe pain in your knee while doing everyday activities.
