What is PCL – Reconstruction?

The posterior cruciate ligament, or PCL is a surgical procedure to remove the torn ligament. Surgeons will reconstruct it with tissue taken from another part of your body or from a human donor. PCL is the strongest ligament of the knee. If you are experiencing pain in the ligament behind the knee, you may be a candidate for PCL knee surgery.

A PCL injury is categorised into following grades by doctors, depending on the severity of injury.

  1. Grade I – A partial tear in the ligament.
  2. Grade II – A partial tear and the ligament feels loose.
  3. Grade III – The ligament is completely torn and an unstable knee.
  4. Grade IV – The PCL is injured along with another ligament being damaged.
